" David Thomson - Potter "
Clay has been a material that I have loved working with for many years.
There is a kind of magic about the way clay is itself so formless but takes on an infinity of different forms and then changes its personality so profoundly as it dries. To start with it is soft and squishy, next it can be cut and grated like cheese and later it becomes dry and chalky.
I work with slabs: flat sheets of clay that can be cut, bent, carved, folded and joined. The range of possibilities is endless. By using slab-building techniques, I am able to create a wide range of three-dimensional forms. Triangular plates and square vases, leaf shaped dishes and rock pool bowls.
The natural world and the geometric world of human construction are endless sources of delight, suggesting ideas for form and texture, colour and balance.
The final phase of firing the pots in the kiln is a dramatic finale which puts to the test all that has gone before. The glazes that have been developed at Happs provide a wonderful palette rich in colour and with plenty of subtle variations to be explored.
So many ideas, so little time!
